Love this photo of Gary with our sons

by Rhonda Barrett ~

This old photo, taken in 1982, is one of my favorite pictures of my husband, Gary, and our sons.

As I look at this picture a few things stand out to me. Obviously, Gary is holding Luke; Rex is sitting on his daddy’s shoulders. The three are smiling. You can’t see me as I’m taking this picture, but you know what? I’m smiling too. Awww–our precious little boys; how quickly 35 years has gone by!

Gary has always been such a fun daddy. I love this quality about him. Picture taken about 1982 in Riverside, California at my Grandma and Grandpa's house.

It says in Psalm 127:3b, “Children are a gift from the Lord” I believe daddies are a gift from the Lord, too! I love this picture of our sons, Rex and Luke, happy in the arms of their big, strong loving daddy; the year 1982.

Luke is just sitting in his daddy’s arms. Luke’s arms hanging down, relaxed in front of him. Luke is not grabbing hold of his daddy for fear that he might fall out of his daddy’s arms. Look at Luke’s big grin! And Rex is lifted up high on his daddy’s shoulders. Rex’s arms loosely circle his daddy’s head and his hands are clasped together like a necklace around his daddy’s neck. Rex is smiling, even his eyes are smiling! Gary’s face is proudly beaming, and rightly so. One of Gary’s greatest joys in life is being a daddy.

Both Rex and Luke, with child-like faith, know that their big, strong daddy loves them and he is not going to drop them.

As I look at this picture and think about it–this is a beautiful picture of our Abba Father. He is Almighty Big, Almighty Strong, and our Abba Father loves us and is not going to drop us.

My life has been filled with ups and downs, good and bad, trials and temptations, joys and sorrows…after all…I live in a broken world and I am a broken person. However, my Abba Father is a perfect God who loves me! I embrace the truth of what He says to me, “Rhonda, you are precious; you are beloved by Me!”

In child-like faith I come to Him and…

I experience His faithfulness when I have been faithless.

I experience His grace when I have not deserved it.

I experience His mercy instead of His wrath.

My heart overflows with thanksgiving daily!

He has picked me up out of the selfish choices I have made…and almost made. He has raised me up, encouraged me, put peace in my heart, and a smile on my face, again and again, in spite of myself. He has never dropped me!

How can I not love Abba Father, after the way He’s loved me?!

And I pray those heart-cry words of mine are also the heart-cry words of my sons, their wives, and my grandchildren, “How can I not love Abba Father, after the way He’s loved me?!”

In James 5:16b it reads, “The prayer of a righteous person (mom/dad) is powerful and effective.”

Our prayers are powerful, that’s what God’s word says…and I specifically love praying scripture prayers over my family.

The monthly Precious In HIS Sight Scripture Prayer Calendar helps me faithfully pray God’s word over my family. If you click on the Calendar, it enlarges in a new window. I take my Bible, and find the scripture reference for the day, then I turn it into a prayer for my loved ones. I print the Calendar and keep it in my Bible. I encourage you to do the same.

What a great story. How time flies, but it’s so good knowing we will spend eternity with our Heavenly Father and our earthly family together forever!

  • Dearest Rosey, Our God has surely shown Himself faithful to our family. When I miss…you and the rest of our family (since we all live so far from each other) I remember this truth you share…eternity, together forever…and I am comforted. What a great Reunion it will be! Lord Jesus, may the circle be unbroken!
