Message from Gary

by Gary Barrett ~

Fall officially started September 22. My  favorite time of the year.

It’s hard to believe that there are only three months left this year!

As I look back on the past nine months, I am filled with joy and thanksgiving as I see how much our faithful God has used this ministry to touch people’s lives in 2016.

Following are just a few examples:

We had a wonderful time with our dear friends Les and Charlotte Lawer when they came to visit us at the Shalom Lighthouse Retreat Center in June.

1.  Les and Charlotte Lawer–retired Deaf pastor and his wife, in Deaf ministry for over 40 years–came to the Shalom Lighthouse Retreat Center at the end of June.

Rhonda and I have been friends with the Lawers for over 30 years. We had a wonderful time together with lots of laughter, fellowship, enjoying meals together, and beautiful times of prayer. Rhonda and I observed that each morning Les and Charlotte started their day together reading the Bible, sharing devotions, and in prayer. Their love for one another and their love for their Lord was obvious–and it was a blessing for Rhonda and me to see.

When the four of us said our good-byes on June 30, 2016, little did we know that it would be the last time we would see Charlotte this side of Heaven. She went home to be with Jesus on August 11, 2016. Please pray for Les and his family during this time of deep sorrow. Thank you.

Beautiful view out the Shalom Lighthouse living room window; sunset over Puget Sound.

2)  A woman called me on the VP after receiving a Gospel Bag that we had mailed to her. Very excited and with tears in her eyes she signed, “Thank you for the movie on the round disk (DVD) and the Picture Bible. For the first time I understand God’s Word!” Over the years thousands of people have received Jesus through the Gospel Bag Ministry.

3)  A Deaf pastor and I were talking on the VP. This person was discouraged. I listened, we shared together, we prayed together, and by the time we hung up, one hour later, God touched this person, encouraged him and gave him peace and joy. Hundreds of pastors and co-workers in Deaf ministry have been encouraged as a result of this outreach to those called of God to serve in the Deaf harvest field.

I am humbled and filled with gratitude at the faithfulness of God to use this ministry through the years (since 1989). There is still so much work still to do; and we need your help.

Jesus says in John 9:4,

“As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work” (NIV).

“We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the One who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work” (NLT).

There are approximately 300 million Deaf people worldwide and only 2% know Jesus s Savior. According to Wycliffe Bible translators there are over 400 different sign languages. I believe that the Deaf are one of the most overlooked and least evangelized people groups in the world with 98% still waiting to “hear” John 3:16, “For God so loved the Deaf world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

I say with Jesus, “We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the One who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.”

As we look around the United States and the world and see what is going on–it’s easy to see that we just might be living in that time that Jesus is talking about–a time when…“the night is coming when we will not be able to work.”

This Summer the ministry experienced a significant decrease in contributions (ministries often experience the “Summer Slump” during June, July, and August). We are praying that God would touch people, like you, to partner with us.

We urgently need your prayers and financial support today!

Today is the day of salvation for the Deaf. While it is day let us do the work TOGETHER that Jesus has called us to do. Your prayers and financial support make a difference in the lives of Deaf people and their families for eternity.
