I found a FIVE-leaf clover!

The year was 1980. One of the last pictures I have of my Mom before she went to be with Jesus. My brother, Bob, is taking the picture. (Me, Robin, Mom, and Rosie).

It’s St. Patrick’s Day and I remember a game my Mom would play with me and my brother and sisters.  We would be outside on a walk, or playing in the yard or in a park, and when we came across a field of clovers Mom would say, “Let’s see who can find a four-leaf clover first.”

Mom, along with us four kids, would sit down in the midst of the clovers.  We were usually quiet as we concentrated on finding the prized four-leaf clover, our eyes focused on the green three-leaf clovers surrounding us, our little hands going through the clovers searching for that unique four-leaf clover.   And one of us usually found one!

To this day, anytime I see a bunch of clovers I am compelled to stop, stoop down, and stare at these interesting three-leaf clovers. And I usually do stop and search for a four-leaf clover.

Back in 1982, I was in our backyard in Lynnwood, Washington. You’ll never guess what happened!  I was looking at the grass and saw a bunch of clover.  I bent down and began looking for a four-leaf clover.  I couldn’t believe my eyes…I spotted a FIVE-leaf clover!!! I put it between two pieces of plastic wrap and kept it in my Bible (until the fire of 1996 when my Bible and that clover disappeared in the flames).

Back to my story.  All day I thought about that clover.  I kept asking God, “Why does this clover have FIVE-leaves?”

God answered me and I wrote this poem.

Today I found a clover
it was hidden in the grass.
And yet it caught my eye
as it was different than the mass.

It had not three leaves,
or four, but five!
And as I pondered God’s creation
I began to wonder–Why?

Why is this one different, Lord?
Why not all the same?
Why is this one different, Lord!
I asked, and asked again.

The answer seemed to come
like a soft gentle breeze.
I choose this one to be different
for Myself just to please.

And that’s the way it is with you-
the one I love so true.
You have not chosen Me
But I have chosen you.

By God’s love, mercy, and grace shown to us in His Son, JESUS, this is who we are, “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9).

Everyday is a new day to praise Jesus for who He is and for what He has done!
