Word-rocks hurt and crush the spirit

Word-rocks hurt and crush the spirit

by Rhonda Barrett ~

The person recklessly slung word-rocks (hurtful words) at the child. And it wasn’t words like “precious”. The words were meant to put down and belittle the child.

When a child is called words of “worthless”, it makes a child feel hopeless.

What would cause a person to talk “trash” to a child? There are a myriad of reasons. Perhaps someone had talked “trash” to them.

When a child is called “trash” it scars their soul and crushes their spirit. I was one of those children and it affected my life for years.

Picture of Rhonda at about 18 months old.

I remember as a child and even as a young woman, I tried so hard to be perfect, but I failed. I thought––as long as I can just get it right, as long as I measure up, as long as I don’t mess up, as long as I don’t make a mistake––I’ll be precious. Otherwise, I was “trash” or “worse”.

The Lord led me on a healing journey. It was an amazing journey as He ministered to me One-on-one. A miracle took place in the deepest depths of my being as God restored my soul…restored my preciousness and changed my life. It is for that reason I call this blog “Precious In HIS Sight”.

I had gotten two words mixed up––”PRECIOUS” and “PERFECT”. God revealed to me the truth!

I am precious!

You are precious!

Our children are precious!

WE ARE PRECIOUS!

The world shouts THE LIES at our children day-in-and-day-out, “You are not precious; you are not worth loving, you are worthless; you are just a piece of matter that doesn’t matter; you are here on this earth by chance; there is no grand plan and there is no purpose for your life.” ALL LIES!

THE REAL TRUTH––WHO GOD SAYS WE ARE IN––PSALM 139!

Precious parent, we have the choice of perpetuating the lies of the world or the truth of God’s Word.

With our kind words and loving actions let our children know that they are precious and that they are a gift from God. It says in Psalm 127:3, “Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from Him.”

Tell your children every day, in every way, “I LOVE YOU. YOU ARE A GIFT FROM GOD TO ME!”

With our kind words and loving actions let our children know that they are “made in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27).

WOW verses from God’s Word about our words.

Proverbs 16:24, “Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

Proverbs 15:4, “Gentle words are a tree of life, a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”

Our words are important. Our words impact our children (and grandchildren).

Something else that impacts our loved ones lives is our prayers. I know I say that every month. It’s the truth! James 5:16b reads, “The prayer of a righteous person (Mom and Dad, Papa and Grandma) is powerful and effective.”

As a young mom, I put together a monthly calendar with a verse-for-the-day. I turned the verses into scripture prayers for my gifts (sons) from the Lord. Through the years, the Calendar has helped me faithfully pray God’s Word over my loved ones. I still use the Calendar. I print the Calendar and keep it with my Bible. Feel free to print the Calendar too. Also, I write on my Calendar specific “stuff” going on in our lives. Needs. Requests. Concerns. It helps me be specific with my prayers.

To the left is this month’s Precious In HIS Sight Scripture Prayer Calendar. Click on the Calendar and it enlarges in a separate window so you can read the daily scriptures easily.

Our dear friends John and Marva Gehm.

My dear friend Marva Gehm made this month’s Calendar. Thank you, Marva. Please pray for Marva as she’s battling breast cancer. I know Marva and her family would appreciate your prayers very much.

Today…each one of us is PRECIOUS. Embrace your children.

One day…those who are in Christ will stand before God PERFECT.

The great exchange––Jesus takes all of our IMPERFECTIONS and He gives us His PERFECTION. Embrace Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father, Take the word-rocks we have thrown and break any power they have had on others in the Name of our Rock and our Redeemer, JESUS. May our words and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O, Lord. AMEN.

For thy Kingdom…In Jesus Name, Amen!

We believe the Deaf are the most unreached people group in the world…they are the least, the lost, the last to ‘hear’ the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I ask you to prayerfully consider partnering with us through your prayers and financial support as we continue sending HIS Light and Truth to Deaf people everywhere. THANK YOU!”

  • Rev. Dorothy M. Callies says:

Thank you, Rhonda for calendar and I print them out. I do pray for Tony. He is precious to God. I remember growing up I had a name, “The Brat.” Years later my oldest sister explained that it was not meant to be negative. As a child, I was into everything since I was the 7th along with 3 bothers & 3 sisters. Often I would disappeared around the wash and being in neighbors’ play house, they would looked for me. Before marrying Tony as Evangelist, God showed me His GRACE on me. Christ’s Robe of Righteousness covered me with His precious blood. I felt “Precious in His sight” since then. I thank God for a praying mom. She prayed daily for Tony and me in our ministry for many years. Thank you, Rhonda for helping me see how precious my mom’s prayer that helped us through the beginning of our ministry since 1967 until God took her home in heaven.

  • Dear Dorothy, Thank you for sharing about your life growing up and God’s healing touch. Your story touches my heart very much. WOW–the powerful prayers of a praying mom since 1967…for you, Tony, and the ministry! That encourages me, and I’m sure many other people are encouraged too as they read your comment. Let us keep praying and never give up praying. God truly does hear and answer our prayers. What a FAITHFUL God we serve. You and Tony are in our prayers. Thank you for your service to the Lord and to the Deaf Harvest Field. God bless and keep you both…even as He always has. Gary and I love you with the love of our Lord. Hugs, Rhonda
